Health Ministries Clinic names interim executive director

Newton, Kan. – “We are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Schmidt as our Interim Executive Director for the Health Ministries Clinic,” reports Jo Kasitz, chairperson, HMC Board of Directors.

“Matt’s professional experiences and collaborative community involvements will be extremely beneficial to our growing relationship between the clinic, the Harvey County Health Department and Prairie View Community Mental Health Center,” she continued.

Schmidt’s background includes more than 10 years as Director of Community Support Services at Prairie View and oversight of the Access and Emergency Services. He serves on the local Emergency Services Planning Council, Suicide Prevention Task Force and a number of statewide committees and task forces.

Schmidt is a 1994 graduate of Bethe lCollege, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in Psychology and minor in history. He continued his education at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare and graduated in 1998 with a Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW).

“I feel drawn to the mission of Health Ministries. I’m excited to build upon the efforts already in place and continue the drive to ensure that holistic, high quality care can be accessed by everyone in our community, regardless of their financial status,” explains Schmidt. “There is a very real energy in our community right now among various agencies to seek out ways to collaborate and improve the quality of life for those we serve. I very much look forward to joining this dialogue.”

The Health Ministries Clinic was recently awarded a federal Health Resources and Services Administration New Access Point grant, providing operational funding for primary and dental care for uninsured and underinsured persons from Harvey, Marion, McPherson and Butler counties.

During 2011, Health Ministries Clinic served more than 4400 patients through nearly 11,000 appointments.  More than 66 percent of those receiving services had no health insurance.

The clinic employs 21 professionals: three physicians, a dentist, two nurse practitioners, one licensed clinical social worker, one integration care coordinator, four nurses, two dental hygienists and seven administrative staff.

Health Ministries Clinic, located at 209 South Pine Street in Newton, is open Monday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Same-day appointments are usually available.
