Auvinen Joins Prairie View Clinical Staff, Psychology Interns Begin Work

September 17, 2019

NEWTON, Kan. (September 17, 2019) – Dr. Erin Auvinen has accepted a position with Prairie View, serving as a Temporary-Licensed Master Level Psychologist. She served as a primary psychology intern last year at Prairie View.

“When I first decided to become a psychologist when I was 11 years old, I wanted to help people who felt alone and disconnected realize that people care about them,” says Auvinen. “As I got older, it became more of wanting to help people find what their life worth living is. That often includes letting go of what others want your life to look like or how society wants you to act. I want to empower the people I work with to live life fully and genuinely.”

Auvinen works with children, teens and families at Prairie View’s Youth and Family Services program in Newton and provides outpatient individual and family therapy. She is a member of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) team, leading a multi-family DBT group on Wednesdays and DBT individual therapy. Auvinen also completes neuropsychological testing and psychological testing for children and teens ages 2 to 18.

Her concentration areas include, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety, OCT, PTSD, eating disorders, disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders, personality disorders, relational issues, abuse and neglect issues, and generalized wellness.

“I have the most experience and enjoyment working with DBT, LGBTQ+ and teenage clients,” says Auvinen. “I love working with teens because they are funny, honest and authentic.”

Kim Diah and Kendyl Dennison began their psychology internships at Prairie View effective Aug. 12.

Originally from Jamaica, Diah is a student of the Clinical Psychology program at Nova Southeastern University in Florida where she has focused on neuropsychological assessment. She has started on the Child/Adolescent rotation and will work with Prairie View’s Youth and Family Services program.

Dennison, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., is a student at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology-DC Campus. She has started on the Adult/Older Adult rotation.
