Prairie View Receives Grant for Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

February 26, 2020

NEWTON, Kan. (Feb. 26, 2020) – Prairie View is pleased to announce that it has received a $2,500 grant from the Hillsboro Impact Fund through the Hillsboro Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Central Kansas Community Foundation. Funds will be used to provide Youth Mental Health First Aid training to Hillsboro USD 410 teachers.

“Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Youth Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis,” says Eric Schrag, director of advancement for Prairie View.

In the Youth Mental Health First Aid course, teachers will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help.

“We believe that Youth Mental Health First Aid training will help equip our personnel who work with youth to provide immediate support during a mental health crisis until professional help arrives,” says Max Heinrichs, Hillsboro USD 410 superintendent.
