Prairie View To Offer DBT Skills Training Group in West Wichita

February 14, 2019

Newton, Kan. (February 4, 2019) – A weekly Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Skills Training Group will begin Wednesday, March 13, at Prairie View’s west Wichita office, located at 7570 W. 21st Street North, Suite 1026-D.

The group will be facilitated by Krista Rumback, LMLP, LCP, and Molly Sapp, LSCSW. It will include three modules that will each last 10-12 weeks: Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Mindfulness will be taught in each module.

DBT was developed for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. The skills have been shown to help those with depression and anxiety, as well as a history of self-harm, chronic suicidality and multiple psychiatric hospitalizations.  Individuals who struggle with managing difficult, intense and/or extreme emotions can also benefit from learning and utilizing DBT skills.

“The benefits from this specific therapy are rewarding in ways that promote an individual’s sense that their life is worth living,” says Sapp.

Participants are asked to commit to the two hours each week of skills training group, two four-hour sessions per month with an individual DBT therapist, and time daily to practice new skills.

Participants can join at the beginning of any module. The group is open to individuals 18 years of age and older. Referrals can be made by an existing individual therapist or medication provider. Individuals can initiate a self-referral by calling Prairie View’s admissions department at 316-284-6400 or 800-992-6292. Those interested in joining the DBT Skills Training Group should be seen for a consultation prior to the start of the module to ensure that DBT is the best fit.

Many insurance plans will cover this service. Prairie View works with insurance companies to make skills training affordable. Medicaid is not accepted.
