Spread the Peace

NEWTON, Kan. – Prairie View, Inc., is the recipient of a $1,000 “Spread the Peace” grant from the Peace, Justice and Service Network of Mennonite Church USA. The grant request was prepared by Western District Conference of Mennonite Church USA.

The grant, benefiting Prairie View’s chaplaincy program, will be used to purchase a wide array of art supplies that patients in the psychiatric hospital will use to create art – and gain spiritual insight and healing.

The chaplaincy and pastoral care programs are entirely donor funded, and are an extension of the organization’s mission, which is to foster healing and growth in individuals and communities by providing behavioral and mental health services with compassion, competence and stewardship in the spirit of Christ.

“This is a ministry of shalom, as Prairie View emphasizes the healing of body, mind and spirit of those most in need in a safe, caring environment,” says Rev. Kathy Neufeld Dunn, Western District Conference associate conference minister. “Western District Conference wants to help Prairie View expand their chaplaincy and spiritual care services to clients, especially those most on the margins – the needy and those who struggle with chronic, severe mental illness.”

Dunn also says that the conference recognizes that too often those who struggle with mental illness feel disappointed with God and cut off from the church.

Supplies will include paints, colored pencils, chalk, various papers, easels, canvases, brushes, clay, blank journals, shelving or other storage units and other supplies requested by clients.
